Angel Almaguer (Chemistry)

Angel Almaguer is an undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry at Florida International University. His professional interests include materials science, nuclear and radiochemistry, and environmental remediation of contaminated sites. Angel expects to graduate in the Summer of 2023 and pursue a PhD in Chemistry.

Angel is also a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Fellow currently working under the mentorship of Dr. Yelena Katsenovich. His current project supports Hanford Site’s groundwater remediation program by application of strong reductants such as zero valent iron and sulfur-modified iron. The objective of Mr. Almaguer’s batch-scale experiments is to evaluate the re-oxidation behavior of perched and groundwater contaminants, such as Tc(VII) comingled with NO3 and UO22+, that have been initially reduced by strong reductants under anaerobic initial conditions followed by aerobic conditions.
