Carlos Perez de Alejo (Mechanical Engineering)

Carlos Perez de Alejo is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Florida International University (FIU). He is expected to graduate in fall 2025 and plants to pursue a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at FIU. As part of the Department of Energy’s Class of 2024, he works under the mentorship of Joseph Sinicrope and Mellissa Komninakis at FIU’s Applied Research Center (FIU-ARC) on nuclear decontamination and decommissioning projects. Carlos’s research focuses on developing adaptable, intumescent fixatives that can be functionalized to stabilize residual contamination across various environments within the EM complex. His work complements ongoing efforts to improve safety protocols during nuclear facility decommissioning. While he has not yet visited the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), Carlos is contributing to the foundational research that will support future field implementations at sites like Savannah River Site (SRS). His efforts are directly aligned with DOE’s mission to safely and efficiently manage environmental cleanup of nuclear facilities.
