DOE Fellow, Daniel Martin, presenting at the IAEA in Vienna, Austria

From December 13-15, 2021 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held its Biennial Forum of the International Decommissioning Network (IDN) in Vienna, Austria. One of Florida International University’s (FIU’s) Department of Energy (DOE) Fellow STEM students, Daniel Martin, participated and presented at this international event.

Daniel represented an international group of young engineers that submitted a proposal to the IAEA Young Professional Challenge in Deactivation & Decommissioning (D&D) and Environmental Remediation. The team was composed of young engineers from the US, Norway and the UK. The proposal outlined the use of robotics and artificial intelligence/machine learning for D&D tasks. The team was selected as one of the top 3 teams from around the globe and was invited to present their concept at this year’s IDN Biennial Forum. “It was my great pleasure to be able to attend this conference in person and represent the Applied Research Center (ARC) by presenting some of my and my colleagues’ work we have accomplished over the last few years. It was a truly breath-taking experience witnessing the transfer of knowledge between countless countries that all have the same common goal of providing a safe, clean, and impactful nuclear environment worldwide” commented Dan Martin.

He went on to add:

“I am truly thankful for the IAEA and the DOE Fellows Program at the Applied Research Center for allowing me this opportunity. It was truly impactful being able to witness as well as share my work in the field of robotics at the IDN forum, as many presenters urgently stressed the need for young professionals to enter this industry as technology advances every day. Congratulations to the entire ARC and international team on a job well done!”
