FIU’s students, faculty, and staff attended a Meet & Greet conducted by NextEra/FPL representatives at FIU’s Modesto Maidique campus. FIU Chemistry students had a unique opportunity to learn firsthand from FPL’s Christopher Cabrera (Chemistry Supervisor) on how chemistry plays an important role in the operation of nuclear reactors and the production of nuclear energy. Mr. Cabrera is a Chemistry supervisor at FPL’s Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant in Florida City, Florida. FPL’s Elisabeth Elder (Corporate Recruiter) gave an introduction to NextEra/FPL cooperate values and current technologies.

“I was amazed at how engaged the FIU students were. They asked many questions regarding potential employment opportunities at FPL” Mr. Cabrera said.

FPL is actively recruiting for current and future opportunities at their nuclear power plants, solar/wind power plants and the newly established engineering center in West Palm Beach.

“This was a very successful visit that allowed FIU students to learn about career opportunities with FPL. A strong partnership between FIU and local industry is essential to provide the right skill set to our students so that they can be successful once they transition to industry” said Dr. Leonel Lagos (Director of Research at FIU’s Applied Research Center).

The students participating in the meet and greet were from FIU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the College of Arts, Sciences & Education.

“This was a wonderful event for our students and we should do it every year!” said Dr. Yong Cai (Chair, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry).

Dr. Uma Swamy said “What an amazing opportunity for our students to learn about the array of employment and internship opportunities FPL has, the working environment and how to get hired. Looking forward to growing this partnership”.
