Sofia Salvador Turner (Environmental Engineering)

Sofia Salvador-Turner is a passionate FIU undergraduate researcher currently conducting research on the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) under the mentorship of Dr. Yelena Katsenovich. As a DOE Fellow, her work focuses on evaluating chemical processes related to the fate and transport of actinides within and outside the repository. Her study examines the sorption of actinides onto iron mineral phases that may form from the corrosion of waste packages by highly saline brines under anoxic conditions. Sofia’s research aims to reduce uncertainty regarding the effects of sorption on actinide migration in and around the repository environment, thereby demonstrating repository compliance with applicable regulations. Her work contributes to the development of safe and sustainable containment strategies for waste disposal.

She is enthusiastic about innovation and is committed to expanding her knowledge and experience in environmental research to address this critical issue with long-term impact.

Her interests include environmental conservation, sustainability solutions, and climate resilience. Sofia plans to continue working at the intersection of science and policy to advance sustainable waste management solutions. She aims to collaborate with industry leaders and policymakers to drive innovation in waste disposal and long-term environmental stewardship.
