Tyler Coy (Computer Engineering)

Tyler Coy (Computer Engineering)

Tyler Coy is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering at Florida International University (FIU). As a DOE (Department of Energy) Fellow he works at FIU’s Applied Research Center in the Robotics Lab. He is expected to graduate in spring 2026 and will pursue his master’s degree upon graduation. As a DOE Office of Legacy Management (LM) Fellow, the goal of Tyler’s work is to develop smart solutions that can assist DOE-LM with the monitoring of disposal sites. FIU has previously developed a robotic platform that uses a ground penetrating radar (GPR) to scan below the surface of a given disposal site. Tyler’s primary focus is on robotics, more specifically programming robots to move autonomously and scan the ground below. Tyler Coy was inducted as a part of the DOE Fellows Class of 2024 and is currently benefiting from the mentorship of Dr. Pieter Hazenberg.

His work involves developing advanced algorithms for autonomous navigation and sensor integration, enabling robots to perform complex tasks in various environments. Tyler’s dedication to innovation and research has led him to collaborate on projects aimed at enhancing robotic capabilities for environmental monitoring and hazard detection. Outside the lab, he actively participates in workshops and conferences, further broadening his knowledge and networking with industry professionals.
