Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) held its annual student poster sessions at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) on August 11, 2010 to showcase intern research and studies. Among of the participants were Department of Energy (DOE) Fellows: Amaury Betancourt,Charles Castello, and Mario Vargas. Amaury’s poster is entitled “Mercury Accumulation by the Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria Desulfovibrio Desulfuricans G20” which deals with the use of bacteria in mercury remediation, Charles’ poster is entitled “Development of a Prototype Methyl-Mercury Monitor for Pore Water Sample Analysis at Oak Ridge Reservation Creek Beds” which deals with the proof-of-concept of a methyl-mercury analysis technique that can be used in the field, and Mario’s poster is entitled “Implementation of Remote Characterization Tools” which deals with the design and development of the mechanism used to collect potentially radioactive samples from stack walls. ORNL faculty and staff, faculty and staff from various universities, and ORNL interns participated in the day’s events.
