On April 20, 2018, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Florida International University’s (FIU) Applied Research Center (ARC) will enter a Memorandum of Understanding (IAEA) to foster collaboration between the two institutions.

The objective of the MoU is to set forth the framework for non-exclusive cooperation between the two institutions in the area of science and technology, knowledge management and transfer, and workforce development and training for decommissioning and environmental remediation. The two institutions have identified the following activities in which cooperation may be pursued, subject to the institutions’ respective mandates, governing regulations, rules, policies and procedures:

  • Collaboration in the areas of waste management (disposal/transportation/treatment), soil and groundwater remediation, deactivation and decommissioning, information technology for decommissioning and environmental remediation, and sustainability;
  • Exchange of unclassified information, including publications and sharing of experiences and best practices, as well as knowledge management, in the above-mentioned technical areas;
  • Collaboration in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) student training and workforce development, including organization of internship programmes and identification of thesis/PhD dissertation topics; and
