About DOE Fellow
Mr. Reinier Hernandez entered Florida International University in 2009 as a transfer student from a Radiochemistry Bachelor’s degree program from Havana, Cuba. Reinier received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry at FIU. Reinier is currently continuing his education in pursuing a PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

DOE Related Projects
Reinier is currently involved in research focused on the evaluation of polyphosphate technology for uranium remediation at DOE Hanford Site in Washington State. The use of phosphate precipitation technology for uranium fixation and hence elimination from Hanford’s ground water, where the contamination levels are impacting the water quality of the Columbia River, have been proven viable. However, a detailed investigation of the adequate conditions for implementing this technology is necessary since an excessive level of phosphate is not desirable. For this reason, finding the appropriate dose of phosphate and its behavior as a contaminant fixative is vital. Reactions Dynamics and Transport phenomena of phosphate are among the principal tasks conducted within this project.
